Rings usually refers to coiled or bent wire of approximately 1 coil. The two ends or tips can have a gap or opening between them. The ends can also be butted (touching) to facilitate welding. Rings may also have a slight overlap of the ends and can be formed from spring wire, low-carbon steel, brass, bronze, stainless steel and various other materials such as Ni-span and Hastalloy. Rings can be used as fixtures. They are also widely used as retainers or snap rings being slightly compressed or expanded and locked in a groove to control movement in mechanical assemblies.
